St. Michael's Episcopal Church is a parish of the Episcopal Diocese of Spokane, one of 110 dioceses that make up the Episcopal Church in the United States, which is one of 38 autonomous churches in the worldwide Anglican Communion. We all trace our roots to the Church of England and we continue to be a bridge church between the Roman Catholic and Protestant traditions. Our central act of worship is the Holy Eucharist, also know as the Mass, the Holy Communion, and the Lord's Supper.
Unique to the Episcopal Church is the Book of Common Prayer. It is common prayer because we all pray it together around the world. The first Book of Common Prayer was compiled in English by Thomas Cranmer in 1549 and since that time many revisions have been made. The present prayer book was published in 1979. The Book of Common Prayer is the authority that governs our worship, outlines the requirements for the sacraments, and describes the primary beliefs of the Church. It has been translated into various languages, including Spanish and French.
The Episcopal Church had traditionally identified three sources of authority for our beliefs: Scripture, Tradition, and Reason. Scripture informs us of God's Word through the biblical message. Tradition informs us of the teachings of the Church from Early Church to the present. Reason is a gift from God, and we are informed by the lessons of scripture and tradition as we make decisions about significant issues in our lives.
Our ordained ministry is the historic threefold one of bishops, priest, and deacons, both men and women. We believe that Christ is the Head of the Church, and by virtue of our baptism, the clergy and laity are all members of His Church.
